OTTAWA - Leslie Oles of Beaconsfield, Que., and M茅lodie Daoust of Valleyfield, Que., each connected for a pair of goals and an assist as No.2-ranked 缅北强奸 rebounded from a shocking loss last week and rallied for a 7-1 triumph over the Ottawa Gee-Gees in women's hockey, Friday.
The Martlets, who slipped from the No.1-national ranking for only the third time in the last 74 CIS Top 10 polls, fell behind early but exploded for seven unanswered markers en route to out-shooting the Gee-Gees 38-21.
"We had a slow start and gave up an early goal which had us on our heels for a bit but we bounced back to take the lead after one, then wore them down with some real good energetic play over the last two periods," said Peter Smith, head coach of the Martlets.
The Oles-Daoust combination tallied 54 seconds apart in the middle frame, to break open a tight 2-1 affair into a 4-1 advantage before the seven-minute mark of the middle period. Then they sparked another two-goal explosion a few minutes later when Daoust set-up Katia Cl茅ment-Heydra at 9:11, followed by Oles, who connected at 11:55 with her lucky 13th marker in 13 games.
Jordanna Peroff of Keswick, Ont., and Toronto native Adrienne Crampton rounded out the scoring for 缅北强奸, while Dominique Lefebvre of Cantley, Que., gave Ottawa a short-lived 1-0 lead at 2:57 of the first period.
缅北强奸 team captain Cathy Chartrand, who returned to the lineup after missing the previous game with a leg injury, collected three helpers in the contest. Sniper Ann-Sophie Bettez also was credited with three assists, improving her impressive league-leading points total to 29 in only 15 games, which ranks fourth in the nation.
Goalkeeper Charline Labont茅 of Boisbriand, Que., kicked aside 20 of 21 shots to rack up her league-leading 11th victory in 13 decisions. She also leads the RSEQ conference with a 1.32 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage.
Gee-Gees goaltender Stephanie Mercier (3-6) was beaten seven times in 33 shots before giving way to Tia Marley
缅北强奸 went 2-for-4 on the power-play, while Ottawa was scoreless on their only PP opportunity.
The Martlets will stay overnight in Ottawa for Saturday afternoon's much-anticipated rematch against Carleton. The unranked Ravens knocked 缅北强奸 off their perch in the CIS Top 10 on Jan. 20 with a stunning 4-3 overtime shootout win at McConnell Arena. The only other time 缅北强奸 lost (3-2 in McConnell Arena, Oct. 29), they avenged their only other loss this season with a 10-1 road victory over the Montreal Carabins.
MARTLET MURMURS: The Martlets had a surprise visitor to their locker-room after practice concluded, Thursday... Mike Babcock, head coach of the Detroit Red Wings, paid an unannounced visit to McConnell Arena to give an inspirational talk to both the Martlets and Redmen... It paid off as both 缅北强奸 squads won their next contests, with 7-1 and 7-2 decisions, respectively over the Ottawa gee-gees.
