Three volleyball Martlets earn all-star honours

MONTREAL - Three members of the 缅北强奸 women's volleyball team have earned all-star conference status -- two of them winning major awards -- as the R茅seau du sport 茅tudiant du Qu茅bec announced the league award winners Wednesday.

Kaiva Mateus, a 6-foot-1 middle blocker from Montreal West earned a spot on the first team and was named as the conference nominee for the CIS Therese Quigley Award, present to the volleyball player who best combines leadership with academics and citizenship.
听
Daphn茅e-Maude Andr茅-Morin, a 5-foot-7 junior born in Vaudreuil-sur-le-Lac, Que., but raised in Kitchener, Ont., earned a berth on the second team and was selected as the conference's recipient of the libero-of-the-year award, for the second consecutive season. The 20-year-old education major led the Quebec conference in digs with an average of 4.29 per set.

Senior Marcela Mansure, a 5-foot-7 setter from Rio de Janeiro, was also named to the second squad, for the third straight year. A 24-year-old master's student in occupational therapy, she ranked second among league leaders in assists with an average of 8.38 per set.

Mateus, a 21-year-old psychology senior who earned a 3.90 grade-point average (out of 4.0) last semester, finished third among kill leaders in the Quebec conference with an average of 2.55 per set. She ranked fourth in points (3.33 per set), fourth in hitting percentage (.255), ninth in stuff blocks (0.69) and 10th in aces (0.31).

When not on the court or in the classroom, Mateus volunteered her time to assist students in making the transition from elementary school to high school. She serves as president of a youth group in Montreal, where she organizes and offers courses in Latvian traditional dance. Mateus also serves as a volunteer at the Trinity Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church in Montreal.
