Soccer women get four all-star berths, two major awards
Ìý
MONTREAL - Ã山ǿ¼é midfielder Julia Bahen of Vancouver, B.C., and head coach Marc Mounicot are among the major award winners and all-stars announced by the Quebec University Soccer League, Wednesday.
Ìý
Bahan, an 18-year-old arts freshman, is one of four members of the Martlets to earn all-conference honours and has been voted by the league's six coaches as rookie of the year. Joining her on the QUSL first team is teammate Katherine Green of Richmond Hill, Ont.
Ìý
Two other Martlets, defender Elizabeth Williams from Calgary and goaltender Shimone Slomowitz of West Vancouver, received second-team status.
Ìý
Mounicot, a 46-year-old native of France who guided a young Martlets squad to an unexpected 10-3-1 second-place finish, was named coach of the year for the fourth time in his 11 seasons.
Ìý
League scoring leader Véronique Maranda from the Montreal Carabins was named player of the year, while Concordia's Fanny Berthiaume of St. Constant, Que., was most sportsmanlike player and Sherbrooke's Marie-Émilie Perreault-Morier of St. Hilaire, Que., was chosen as the player who best combines citizenship with athletics and academics.
Ìý
Bahen started in all 14 regular season contests and was the team's third-leading scorer with five points, including one goal. In non-conference play, she has started in 20 of 21 games overall, heading into Friday's semifinal matchup with Sherbrooke at Molson Stadium.
Ìý
Green, a 5-foot-11 defender, scored twice in 11 games, all of them as a starter and was twice selected by opposing coaches as Ã山ǿ¼é's player of the game. She is a political science sophomore who also merited second-team recognition and rookie-of-the-year honours last season.
Ìý
Williams, a civil engineering senior who serves as team captain, scored once and set up another in 13 games.
Ìý
Slomowitz, a management sophomore, appeared in nine games, posting a 5-2-1 record with five shutouts in eight starts, a 0.98 goals-against average and a .724 save percentage. She made 21 saves on 29 shots in 731 minutes played.
Ìý
The league's sudden-death semifinals are scheduled for Friday, with fourth-place Laval (9-3-2) visiting the Montreal Carabins (12-1-1) in a 6 p.m. start and third-place Sherbrooke (9-2-3) taking on second-place Ã山ǿ¼é (10-3-1) at Molson Stadium in a 7 p.m. affair.
Ìý
The two squads left standing will meet each other on Sunday afternoon in the league championship game at the home field of the higher-seeded team.
