Sixth annual Pow-wow to highlight education
First Peoples’ House hosts celebration of aboriginal culture
Ă山ǿĽé and its First Peoples’ House proudly present the Sixth Annual Pow-wow, a celebration of the art and culture of indigenous peoples on Friday, Sept. 21.
Ă山ǿĽé’s lower campus will be the site of traditional dances, drumming, Inuit throat singing and native crafts during the daylong celebration. Education circles showcasing three of Ă山ǿĽé's faculties – Social Work, Law and Medicine – will offer information and career advice to prospective high school students from Kahnawake, Kahnesatake and Akwesasne communities. The event will welcome community groups such as the Canadian Aboriginal Science and Technology Society, Qikiqtaaluk Environmental and Projet Autochtone du QuĂ©bec. Dance demonstrations by Lisa Odjig, World Champion Hoop Dancer, and a concert by Vancouver musician Kinnie Starr will round out the festivities.
