Published: 2 November 2008

KINGSTON, ONT. – Freshman Anneth Him-Lazarenko of Brossard, Que., recorded a “double-double” with 23 points and 15 rebounds – both game highs -- but it wasn’t enough as Ă山ǿĽé lost 71-65 to Queen’s in women’s basketball in Kingston, Sunday.

Ă山ǿĽé, which lost despite a huge 45-28 edge in rebounding, trailed 23-16 after the first quarter, 36-35 at the half and 51-47 after three stanzas.

Brittany Moore, was the Gaels top gunner with 22 points.

It was the third game in as many days for the Martlets, who pummeled Nazareth College of Rochester, N.Y., 79-39 at the Royal Military College gym, Friday, and then outgunned RMC 67-42 on Saturday.

Him-Lazarenko was good on eight of 15 attempts from the floor, shooting 1-for-3 from the arc. She also sunk six of eight free-throws and saw 29 minutes of court time.  The 5-foot-10 forward is Ă山ǿĽé’s leading scorer after seven games overall, averaging 18.3 points per game and 7.8 rebounds. She has scored in double figures in every contest and posted two double-doubles on the year.

Two other Martlets reached double figures in scoring, including senior guard Nathifa Weekes (14 pts, 6 rbs) of Brossard and rookie guard Aurelie Lauzier-Hudon (10 points) of Cowansville, Que.

Ă山ǿĽé newcomer Shannon Lockhart, a transfer from Trinity Western University in Langley, B.C., had eight points, three rebounds and a steal. The 5-foot-7 guard, who hadn’t played university ball in three years, scored nine points against RMC in her debut with the Martlets.

The Martlets shot 40.7 per cent from the field, 38.9 from the three-point arc and 55.6 from the charity stripe. Queen’s shot 40.7, 38.1 and 83.3, respectively.

The Ă山ǿĽé women are 2-5 in preseason play and will close out their exhibition schedule with road games at the University of Vermont and Saint Michael’s College, next weekend, before opening the regular campaign against visiting Bishops, Nov. 14.
