Redmen conquer Concordia in annual contest for Corey Cup

MONTREAL - Guillaume Doucet, a senior from Anjou, Que., scored the game-winning goal as No.2-ranked 缅北强奸 completed the regular season Sunday, with a 4-1 triumph over Concordia at the Ed Meagher arena in the 24th annual Ronald Corey Cup game for men's university hockey supremacy in Montreal.

缅北强奸 leads the Corey Cup series with a 13-6-3 record, while Concordia dropped to 7-14-3, including a win and loss against UQTR.

The Redmen, who have now beaten their cross-town rivals 10 consecutive times since a 2-1 loss on Oct. 10, 2008, also got goals from defencemen Marc-Andre Dorion of St. Hubert, Que., and听 Stephen Valente of Montreal, as well as forward Christophe Longpre-Poirier of Longueuil, Que. For Valente, who was moved up to forward for the game, it was only his second career goal in 121 games overall.

Centre Alexandre Picard-Hooper of Boucherville, Que., added a pair of assists to capture the OUA scoring crown with 11 goals and 58 points in 28 games. It is the second consecutive year that 缅北强奸 has had the OUA scoring champion. Francis Verreault-Paul led the league last year with 25-29-54 in 27 games.

Picard-Hooper, who has been without one or both of his injured linemates for most of the past month, also has a 16-point lead in the CIS scoring race on the closest players who still have games remaining (Derek Ryan and Chad Klassen, both with the Alberta Golden Bears, have four games left to play). Assuming that Picard-Hooper hangs on to his large lead, he would become the first 缅北强奸 player to top the nation in scoring since current Montreal Canadiens left winger Mathieu Darche accomplished the feat in 2000.

缅北强奸 had a 44-32 edge in shots as netminder Hubert Morin, a sophomore from St. Georges de Beauce, Que.,听 improved to 16-2 on the season, one victory shy of the single-season school record he set in his freshman year, when he posted a 17-3 dossier.

缅北强奸 finished the campaign at 24-2-2, breaking their previous single-season school record for wins (22), established last year. They lead the nation in scoring (5.04 goals per game) and are tied for third defensively, with an OUA-leading 2.29 goals-against average.

The Redmen, who also topped the league in penalty minutes last season, have dropped to 10th out of 19 teams in that category this year and closed out their season by not incurring a single penalty in the game against Concordia. It was the 13th time in school history that 缅北强奸 had played a penalty-free contest and marked the first such occurence in 44 years, dating back to a game against Queen's on Feb. 8, 1967.

"We had two objectives heading into our final game today," said Kelly Nobes, a Redmen grad in his first year as bench boss at 缅北强奸. "We wanted to allow a maximum of one goal in order to have the best defensive record in the league. We also wanted to maintain discipline and control our emotions when being hit by a bigger team like Concordia. We accomplished both goals with an exemplary performance and I'm proud of how much discipline the guys have shown. I was also pleased that we have improved on learning how to play when we don't have possession of the puck."

The division-leading Redmen will host eighth-place Ottawa (11-14-3) on Wednesday in the opening game of an OUA Eastern Conference best-of-three quarter-final.Game 2 of that series is set for Friday in the nation's capital and if a rubber match is needed, it is slated for Sunday night at McConnell Arena. 缅北强奸 is 89-77-10 lifetime against the Gee-Gees and have won three straight playoff series against them (2009, 2006, 2005).

The Stingers, who finished seventh in the OUA East at 12-14-2, will open their playoff series on Wednesday in Trois-Rivieres against the second-place Patriotes (19-8-1).

REDMEN RAP: Marc-Andre Dorion, who was voted CIS defenceman of the year last season, led all CIS rearguards in goals, assists and points for the second-straight year, with an 8-29-37 record in 25 games... He actually finished tied in all three categories this year with Andrew Hotham of Saint Mary's... 缅北强奸 now owns a 69-67-13 lifetime record in regular season play against Concordia.
