Public consultations on reuse of the existing buildings of the MUHC
Mr. Raymond Royer, Chairman of the Governing Committee, is pleased to announce public consultations on the reuse of the existing buildings of the MUHC: the Montreal General Hospital, the Royal Victoria Hospital, the Montreal Children's Hospital, the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital and the Montreal Chest Institute.
"We invite Montreal citizens and organizations to participate in the public hearings, to express their opinions and constructive ideas on the reuse of the buildings and lands currently used by the five hospitals," Mr. Royer explains.
An independent consultation process
To ensure an independent consultation process, the MUHC's directors have formed a Governing Committee made up of four persons who have no connection to the health care community or to the MUHC's structure. They are Mr. Raymond Royer, President and Chief Executive Officer of Domtar; Ms. Nancy Dunton, Head of University and Professional Programs at the Canadian Centre for Architecture; Mr. Francis Fox, Chairman of the Board of Rogers Telecommunications Quebec; and Mr. Brian Levitt.
The Governing Committee has appointed a Consultative Committee to hold the public consultations and chosen commissioners who are independent citizens of recognized integrity, committed to the Montreal community.
This Consultative Committee is composed of Mr. Roy L. Heenan, lawyer and founder of the firm Heenan Blaikie, who is the Chairman; Senator Joan Fraser; and Mr. Michel Yergeau, lawyer and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the law firm Lavery de Billy.
The commissioners will transmit their analysis and conclusions to the Governing Committee in a report that will be made public in April 2001.
The committee's first hearings will be information sessions to present by the M.U.H.C. in particular studies that have already been done. These will be held on November 21 and 22. The second round of hearings, during which members of the public are invited to express their opinions and suggestions, will be held on January 15 and 16, 2001.
All sessions will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. in the Atrium of Samuel Bronfman House, Concordia University, 1590 Docteur Penfield in Montreal.
"We want to ensure that the entire process is transparent and credible so that we arrive at the solutions of most benefit to the entire Montreal community," Governing Committee Chairman Raymond Royer concluded.
For his part, Mr. Culver stressed that "we remain committed to working with our fellow Montrealers to find appropriate new vocations for our existing buildings."
