Plante digs deep as Martlets master Marauders

Published: 28 December 2010

TORONTO - Freshman Genevi猫ve Plante of Montreal, registered 21 digs and 11 kills as the 缅北强奸 women's volleyball team defeated the McMaster Marauders 3-1 in their opening match at the 20th annual National Invitational Tournament, Tuesday.

The Martlets won by set scores of 25-22, 20-25, 25-20 and 25-22 at the U of T Athletics Centre.

Plante, a 5-foot-10 power-hitter, added one ace and a 2.39 passing ratio (out of 3.0) as 缅北强奸 was playing for the first time in 30 days, due to the December exam break.

"I was pretty pleased with our overall performance," said 缅北强奸 head coach Rach猫le Beliveau. "Considering that we had only one practice (yesterday) before the tournament began and it was without a large part of the team as many of our players flew directly into Toronto. We passed extremely well."

Kelsey Irwin, a fifth-year senior from Vancouver, B.C., racked up a game-high 15 kills to go along with 4.5 stuff blocks. Sophomore Emily Kyte of Ottawa and junior Kaiva Mateus of Montreal West, added 15 and seven kills, respectively.

Sophomore Victoria Pelletier of Westmount, Que., led the team in digs with 20 and Marcela Mansure, a third-year setter from Brazil, was credited with 44 assists.

The Martlets, who improved to 17-13 overall, play St.FX and Brock on Dec. 29 and will close out the tourney against host Toronto, Dec. 30.

MARTLET MURMURS: After suffering a plethora of injuries early in the first semester, the month off has given the Martlets sufficient time to heal their wounds. The only lingering injury is to highly-recruited freshman Marie-Christine Lapointe, a six-foot setter from St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., who was expected back in time for this tourney. However, her left knee hasn't recovered sufficiently and her expected return date is uncertain.
