MONTREAL – Zaria Stoffman, a 5-foot-10 hurdler from Vancouver, B.C., was the only Ã山ǿ¼é athlete to win gold at the 14th annual Ã山ǿ¼é Team Challenge track and field meet at Tomlinson Fieldhouse over the weekend. The 20-year-old philosophy junior took the women’s 60m hurdles in 9.05 seconds.

She was one of four Ã山ǿ¼é athletes to reach the podium.

Six meet records and three fieldhouse marks fell – all in women’s events – in the two-day competition which featured some 550 athletes and was billed as the largest university meet in Canada. Guelph scored 81 points to win the women’s title, while York took the men’s side with 70 points. Ã山ǿ¼é finished ninth in the women’s division and 10th of the 15 schools in the men’s competition.

Canadian Olympian Nick Macrozonaris, of Laval, Que., won a special invitational 60-metre men’s sprint to highlight the competition.

Macrozonaris, representing the Perfmax Racing track club, was clocked in 6.72 seconds, a fraction of a second ahead of Charles Allen, a fellow national team member also from Perfmax, who finished in 6.73. Bianco Richard of Club Athletisme de Montreal, was third in 6.86. Hank Palmer, another national team sprinter, was disqualified after a false start.

In a women’s special invitational 300m race, national team middle distance runner Esther Akinsulie (38.15) edged out Kimberly Hyacinthe (38.23) as the duo finished one-two to post the ninth and 10th fastest times in the world during the current indoor season.

Other Ã山ǿ¼é athletes to reach the podium included Lucas Lafourcade, a freshman from Bourdeaux, France, and veteran Alana Battiston of Toronto. They both won silver medals, in the men’s and women’s pentathlon, respectively.

Maxime Beaumont-Courteau, a third-year medical student from Montreal, shared a bronze medal with U of T’s Jason Wurster, after leaping a height of 4.60 metres in the pole vault, just missing his Ã山ǿ¼é record of 4.61m set in 2007.

Genevieve Thibault of the Laval Rouge et Or, Megan Brown from the Toronto Varsity Blues and Heather Hamilton of the York Lions each established meet and fieldhouse records.

Thibault won the 60m dash (7.39), while Brown took the 3000m (9:11.69) and Hamilton garnered gold in the pole vault (4.06m).

The three other meet records to fall came in the 1000m (Lindsay Carson, Guelph, 2:49.97), the weight throw (Annie Larose, Sherbrooke, 17.88) and the 4x800 relay (9:13.21), won by a McMaster quartet that includeded Erika Scott, Katie Anderson, Sarah Haliburton and Jillian Wyman.
