MVP Him-Lazarenko heads list of Martlet basketball award winners

MONTREAL - Anneth Him-Lazarenko of Ste. Doroth茅e, Que., has been named most valuable player of the 缅北强奸 women's basketball team for the 2009-10 season. Other major awards, announced by head coach Ryan Thorne, went to Nathifa Weekes (most outstanding defensive player) of Brossard, Que., H茅l猫ne Bibeau (most improved player) of Longueuil, Que., Marie-Eve Martin (rookie of the year) of Granby, Que., and Stephanie Bergeron (most determined player) of Montreal.

Him-Lazarenko bounced back from off-season knee surgery on a torn ACL to earn all-conference honours in the Quebec league. The 5-foot-10 forward finished second among QUBL leaders in both scoring (15.0 points per game) and rebounding (7.8 per game). Last week, the 22-year-old history and geography major in the faculty of education won the University's Mac Teskey award for demonstrating courage and morale worthy of honorable mention. Last month, she received the Tracy MacLeod award, a national honour from the CIS, which recognizes determination,听perseverance and unwavering spirit.

Weekes, a 24-year-old social work senior, was second among conference leaders in steals with 36 in 16 regular season contests. The 5-foot-7 guard also tied for ninth in blocked shots (4) and was 12th in assists (26). She averaged 7.8 points and 4.4 rebounds per game and ranked fifth among league free-throw shooters at 75.0 per cent.

Bibeau, a 6-foot-1 forward, shot a league-leading 92.6 per cent from the foul-line, making 25 of her 27 free-throw attempts. Averaging over 19 minutes per game, the 21-year-old education freshman connected on 35 per cent of her attempts from the field and posted an identical success rate in three-point shooting, netting 14 three-pointers to go along with 13 steals in 16 games.

Martin, a 5-foot-8 guard who ranked third among league leaders with an average of 32.3 minutes of court-time, merited conference all-rookie status after finishing fourth in the QUBL scoring race, averaging 12.1 points per game. The 20-year-old physical and health education freshman also was fourth in three-point shooting (31.5), 12th in rebounding (4.3 rpg), 11th in field-goal shooting (40.6%), 12th in assists (1.6 avg.),
Bergeron, in her second and final season with the Martlets after transferring from Franklin Pierce University, received the team's Martlet Award given annually to the player whose relentless pursuit of excellence on and off the court, best characterizes听the spirit of the program. The 5-foot-6 guard was second on the team in minutes played (30.2 avg.), averaged 6.9 points and 2.1 rebounds per game, shot 80.0 per cent from the foul-line, 27.2 from three-point range and 25.0 per cent from the floor. A 24-year-old public relations major, she also ranked second on the team in steals (25) and tied for the lead in assists (26).
