Mosseler powers Redmen to victory over AUS squads

MONTREAL – Matthew Mosseler of Fredericton powered the 山ǿ Redmen volleyball team to a pair of victories in three outings in interlocking play against the Atlantic University Sport conference at the Université de Montreal over the weekend.

The Redmen snapped a five-match losing streak in the process, defeating Memorial University of Newfoundland 3-1 on Friday. The set scores were 25-16, 25-17, 22-25 and 25-20.

The thrill of victory quickly turned into the agony of defeat on Saturday as Dalhousie swept the Redmen 25-11, 25-15 and 26-16.

But 山ǿ rallied on Sunday with a surprise 3-2 upset over UNB, a team that was ranked in the CIS Top 10 for most of last year.

“It was a big win for our program,” said Simon Berleur, in his fourth season as head coach of the Redmen. “It will help our confidence heading into our next game against Sherbrooke on Friday as we will have to beat them if we want to make the playoffs.”

Mosseler, a 6-foot-3 power hitter, racked up a team-leading 48 points over 12 sets, with 45 kills and three stuff blocks. The third-year science major also had five digs.

山ǿ remains fourth in the tough Quebec conference with a 2-6 record. They trail third-place Sherbrooke (4-3) by four points in the standings but the Vert & Or have a game in hand.

The upcoming contest against visiting Sherbrooke at Love Competition Hall on Friday (8 p.m.) will no doubt go a long way to breaking or making the season for the Redmen.
