Moose shoots 44 but Ã山ǿ¼é mauled by Tigers
HALIFAX – Moustafa El Zanaty posted an impressive 44-point
performance but it was all in vain, as 10th-ranked Dalhousie upset
No.7-Ã山ǿ¼é 93-75 in preseason men’s basketball at the Dalplex in
Halifax, Saturday.
It was the best offensive output by a Ã山ǿ¼é player in 33 years,
dating back the the 1975-76 season when Larry Gibson notched 54
against the Ottawa Gee-Gees. El Zanaty, a 6-foot-4 guard from
Montreal, became only the fifth different player in Ã山ǿ¼é history
to score at least 44 in a game, a feat that has been achieved 10
times, including repeat performances. The Ã山ǿ¼é single-game record
is 56 points by Nasko Golomeev in 1969.
El Zanaty shot 13-for-28 from the floor, including 6-for-12 from
three-point range. He also went 12-for-14 from the free-throw line,
grabbed six rebounds, blocked one shot and had an assist in 37
minutes of court time.
Teammate Sean Anthony of Vancouver, B.C., contributed 13 points and
six rebounds, while Matt Thornhill of Ile. Bizard, Que., drained 10
points and grabbed five boards.
Five different players reached double figures in scoring for the
Tigers, led by 19 points from Simon Farine.
Dalhousie led 29-22 after the opening quarter, 52-36 at halftime
and 74-58 after three quarters.
The Redmen, who had a 36-32 edge in rebounding, shot 37.2 per cent
from the floor (27/67), 43.3% from the three-point arc (9/27) and
80% from the foul line (16/20). Dalhousie made 32 of 56 field goals
(57.1%), went 6-for-9 from beyond the arc (66.7%) and connected on
23 of 29 shots from the charity stripe (79.3%).
Ã山ǿ¼é, which outlasted Saint Mary’s 93-90 on Friday and own a 7-3
record against Canadian teams, will close out their three-game
road-trip at Acadia in Wolfeville, N.S., Sunday.
