Moose and Pony show continues as Redmen slay SMU

Published: 31 October 2008

HALIFAX – Moustafa El Zanaty scored a game-high 29 points and Sean Anthony posted his third “double-double” in as many games, leading No.7-ranked 山ǿ to a 93-90 preseason victory over Saint Mary’s, the defending Atlantic conference men’s basketball champions, Friday.

It was the fourth consecutive win for the Redmen, who own a 7-2 record against Canadian university teams and are in the midst of a three-game tour of the Maritimes. The Redmen, who found themselves nationally-ranked this week for the first time in seven years, led 25-23 after the opening quarter and 46-44 at the half before stretching their lead to 17 points in the third stanza and settling on a 74-61 lead heading into the final quarter.

El Zanaty, a 6-foot-4 guard from Montreal, shot 10-for-23 from the floor -- including 4-for-10 from three-point range – and sunk all five free-throw attempts. "Moose" was also credited with four rebounds, three assists and a steal.

Anthony, a 6-foot-4 power forward who is as reliable as a stallion, played all 40 minutes for the second straight contest. The 22-year-old native of Vancouver, B.C., tallied 24 points and 10 rebounds, making 10 of 17 attempts from the field.

Rookie Joey Haywood and Ikeobi Uchegbu, a junior from Nigeria, scored 25 and 24, respectively, in a losing cause for SMU.

Despite fielding five starters who each measure only 6-foot-4, the Redmen had a 37-32 lead in rebounds and a 6-1 margin in steals. They shot 52.9 per cent from the floor (19/38), 44.4% from beyond the arc (12/27) and 70% from the foul line (7/10). The Huskies countered with a 17-for-35 performance from the field (49.3%), 7-for-20 from “three-land” (35.0%) and made 13 of 16 shots from the line (81.3%).

Matt Thornhill, a junior guard from Ile. Bizard, Que., contributed 13 points to the Redmen cause, while Pawel Herra of Kingston, Ont., had 12 (all in the first half) and Montrealer Michael White added six points and grabbed seven boards.

Rounding out the scoring for 山ǿ was Jesse Woods (6 points) of Shawano, Wisconsin, Jeff Cumming (3) of Victoria, B.C., and Montrealer Sebastien Gatti (2).

山ǿ plays at Dalhousie on Saturday afternoon, before closing out the road-trip at Acadia in Wolfeville, N.S., Sunday.
