MONTREAL - Ryan McKiernan, a sophomore defenceman from White Plains, N.Y., tallied twice and added an assist as No.2-ranked 缅北强奸 skated to a 5-3 victory over No.9-UQTR in the OUA East conference best-of-three final series opener at McConnell Arena last night.

The streaking Redmen, who have won eight straight games, including a 5-0 mark in the post-season, outshot the Patriotes 39-31 as netminder Hubert Morin of St. Georges de Beauce, Que., registered the win.

"It ws a great win for us," said Redmen team captain Evan Vossen, a fifth-year senior from Swift Current, Sask., who was the last player to leave the building in what could be his final game ever at McConnell Arena. "A number of the guys realized that this could be their last-ever opportunity to play at home, in a rink that we all love.

"The Patriotes came out hard early on but we managed to tame them a little bit and take the momentum once we got our feet going. We stuck to the game plan and did what we needed to do to get the job done," added Vossen, who collected a pair of assists and is now tied for the Redmen scoring lead with eight points in five playoff games.

UQTR came out flying, had a 5-0 edge in shots over the first five minutes and took a 1-0 lead on a power-play marker at 4:32 by Felix Lefrancois.

But the Redmen rallied to take a 2-1 lead on first-peried power-play goals by Francis Verreault-Paul, a senior from Mashteuiatsh, Que.,听 and McKiernan, at 5:29 and 15:46, respectively.

The Pats evened the score at 2-2 when Pierre-Alexandre Joncas netted his third of the playoffs at 18:27 of the first frame.

However McKiernan answered again for the Redmen early in the second stanza and senior Andrew Wright of Toronto made it 4-2 with what proved to be the game-winner at 7:22 of the period.

"Wrighty had a great rebound game (after struggling in the semifinal series clincher at Ottawa)," said Kelly Nobes, head coach of the Redmen. "He was was winning puck battles and foot-races, getting pucks to the net, moving his feet wide with speed and was rewarded with a big goal."

The Pats narrowed the gap to 4-3 when Pierre-Luc Lessard scored at 17:10 but sophomore Benoit Levesque of Vaudreuil, Que., gave the Redmen an insurance marker at 5:41 of the final period.

"The guys battled hard for 60 minutes, finished our checks and responded physically with some big hits," added Nobes. "It was an all-round solid performance."

缅北强奸, the defending league champions, can wrap up the best-of-three series on Saturday night in Trois-Rivi猫res. It would be the sixth straight playoff series win over the Pats after losing the first 11 series ever played between the bitter archrivals.

If a rubber match is needed, it will be back at McConnell Arena on Sunday at 7 p.m.
