MONTREAL - Mélissa Coré, a member of the Ã山ǿ¼é University women's golf team, will be competing at the eighth annual Canadian collegiate championships at Kingswood Park in Fredericton, N.B., May 30 to June 3.

The 23-year-old native of Beaconsfield, Que., is one of 156 golfers, 56 of them women (including 12 from Quebec institutions), who have qualified for the event, sponsored by Golf Canada. Among the Quebec women joining Coré are five from the Université de Montréal, five from Université Laval and one from École de technologie Supérieure (ETS).

The competition will also serve as a good tune-up for Coré, who is one of five Canadian women to qualify for the FISU world university golf championships in Antequera, Spain, June 7-11. A post-graduate student in management, Coré became the first Ã山ǿ¼é woman to capture the Quebec university individual golf championship last fall. She competed at the 2007 Universiade in Bangkok, where she had the best Canadian result in the women's competition, finishing 34th overall. Coré was eighth at the 2009 RCGA university college nationals. Coré is a 2008 graduate of UBC, who previously attended John Abbott College.

The Canadian collegiate championship begins Sunday with a practice round and opening ceremonies. Following Wednesday's third round of play, the field will be reduced to the top 10 men's and the top five women's teams, as well as any individuals within 15 strokes of the lead.
Ìý
As part of Golf Canada's "Pathway to Champions" program, both the male and female individuals achieving the low score after 72 holes (four rounds) of play will earn an exemption into the 2010 Canadian amateur championships, with the men's tourney slated for the London Hunt & Country Club in London, Ont., and the 2010 Royale Cup Canadian women's amateur championship held at Morningstar Golf Course in Parksville, B.C., respectively.
