缅北强奸 golfers fail to make the grade at Canadian collegiate championship

Published: 31 May 2012

VICTORIA, B.C. - Brian Neill of Ottawa shot a six-over-par 77 to lead the 缅北强奸 Redmen golf team but it was insufficient as Neill and his four teammates failed to make the cut after three rounds of play at the Canadian collegiate championship, conducted by Golf Canada, Thursday, at the Cordova Bay Golf Course in Victoria, B.C.

Tom Calvet and Benoit Miquel, both natives of France, had the second and third-best 缅北强奸 scores on the day. Calvet posted a seven-over 78, while Miquel shot an 80. The other Redmen teammates -- Ryan Boyd and Sean McKinney - each shot 82.

Boyd was 缅北强奸's top golfer over the three days, shooting rounds of 80, 75 and 82 to finish at +24. Neill (83, 79, 77) and Miquel (78, 81, 80) each finished at +26, followed by McKinney (87, 83, 82; +29) and Calvet (80, 85, 78; +30).

The Redmen finished last of 20 teams, shooting a combined three-round score of 956, which was 104 over par. Over the three rounds, 缅北强奸 registered only one eagle, four birdies, three pars, 13 bogeys and 17 double bogeys.

"I was disappointed with our results as some of our players are capable of playing much better than they showed here," said Bob Dubeau, head coach at 缅北强奸. "But clearly, our team lacks the competitive experience to play at this level. We have some work to do before next year's event, which is scheduled to be played at a Quebec course."

Heading into Friday's championship round, the Laval Rouge et Or lead the men's division, while the UBC Thunderbirds lead the women's side. The top six males and five females will receive exemptions into the 2012 World University Championship.

Paced by Ste. Georges de Beauce, Que. native Max Gilbert's round of 6-under-par 65 and Rouyn-Noranda, Que. native Sonny Michaud's tally of 5-under 66, the Laval Rouge et Or registered a combined third-round score of 11-under 273 to establish a 16-shot lead atop the men's team competition standings over the Waterloo ahead of Friday's final round.

The Rouge et Or, who also fielded Charles C么t茅 of Thetford-Mines, Que., and Ugo Coussaud and Julien Proulx of Quebec City, sit at 12-under 840 heading into the fourth and final round, Friday.

The UBC Thunderbirds are third, 21 strokes off the lead, while defending champion Humber College sit fourth, 33 shots back.

Gilbert, who has a three-day tally of 5-under 208, leads the men's individual standings by one stroke over Michaud, who boasts a 54-hole score of 4-under 209. Team Canada's Garrett Rank of Elmira, Ont., representing the Waterloo Warriors, is alone in third at 3-under 210, while UBC's Scott Malo of Calgary is fourth at 2-under 211.

"I played solid. I played very good," said Gilbert, who tallied six birdies on the day. "I made no mistakes on the course. I made no bogeys. It was my first bogey-free game ever, so I'm pretty happy about the way I played."

Coussaud, plus Toronto natives Harris Bundy of Western University and Simon McInnis from the University of Waterloo, along with UBC's Scott Secord of Calgary, are all tied for fifth at 1-under 212.

On the women's side, the UBC contingent of Kylie Barros of Edmonton, Reagan Wilson of Calgary, Alyssa Human of Kamloops, B.C. and Stephanie Wong of Richmond, B.C., shot a combined 8-over 221 on the day to secure a six-stroke lead in the team competition over the Victoria Vikes.

Human, who carded a round of 1-over 72 on Thursday and is 7-over 220 for the championship, sits atop the individual standings with a single stroke advantage over UVic's Megan Woodland of Victoria, B.C., and Brantford, Ont.'s Devon Rizzo of the University of Waterloo.

Barros, the defending women's champion, is sixth, seven shots off the lead at 14-over 227.

Following Thursday's third round, a cut was made to the low 10 male teams and low 6 female teams. Teams and individuals within 15 shots of the lead also made the cut.

The final round of the tourney tees off Friday at 7:30 a.m. PDT.

All rounds of the championship at Cordova Bay Golf Course are open to the public and admission is free.
