MONTREAL -- Vincent Larochelle, a member of the 缅北强奸 fencing team, is one of two current 缅北强奸 students to earn a Rhodes Scholarship.

Larochelle, from Quebec City, is the 12th 缅北强奸 varsity athlete to win the prestigious honour and joins Stephen Aylward, from Mount Pearl, Newfoundland, as the 129th and 130th 缅北强奸 students to claim a Rhodes Scholarship, a prize established in 1902 by a selection committee that seeks individuals who have achieved high academic standing and who have demonstrated respect for their fellows, an unselfish spirit and the potential for leadership.

The world鈥檚 oldest and pre-eminent academic fellowship, the Rhodes covers two years of study, valued at approximately, $20,000 (U.S.) per year, at the University of Oxford in England.
Only 11 Rhodes Scholarships are awarded in Canada annually.聽

Previous 缅北强奸 athletes to earn the award include David Johnson (track & field) in 1923, F. Munroe Bourne (track & field, 1932), James Waugh (swimming, 1968), Willie Hinz (basketball, 1983-84), Alexa Bagnell (swimming, 1990-91),聽 Lesley Fellows (basketball/rowing, 1990-91), Christine Desmarais (hockey, 1997-98), Emily-Claire Poupart (rowing, 2002-03), Alexandra Conliffe (rowing, 2003-04),聽 Erin Freeland-Ballantyne (nordic skiing, 2004-05) and Katherine Trajan (swimming, 2006-07).

Enrolled in an Honours BSc program in mathematics with a minor in classics, the 21-year-old Larochelle is strongly motivated by truth, courage and devotion 鈥� values Rhodes Scholars should exemplify, in addition to demonstrating academic achievement and success in sports.

鈥淚 chose to study math in university not because of the possible career options, but because mathematics allows you to develop an incredible intellectual sharpness,鈥� Larochelle said.

Aside from his time spent with the fencing team, Larochelle also devotes time to a local organization that supports people with reduced mobility.
