Ă山ǿĽé bids for CIS soccer championships
OTTAWA (CIS) – Canadian Interuniversity Sport announced Thursday the reception of bid proposals from 13 universities to host 13 national championships in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.

This latest round of bidding for CIS championships included the following sports: cross country (2010, 2011), women’s soccer (2011, 2012), men’s soccer (2011, 2012), swimming (2011), track and field (2011, 2012), women’s volleyball (2012, 2013) and men’s volleyball (2012, 2013).

The next step in the selection process will be the bid presentations, via conference call, to the Selection Committee on June 8th. The Selection Committee will be appointed by the CIS Board of Directors and its make-up will include the following voting members: President or alternate, Vice-President Marketing or alternate, Vice-President Sport or alternate, up to four additional CIS members, and up to two external experts.

A final decision on all championships up for bid should be announced the week of June 9th.

“CIS is looking to select Hosts who will not only organize technically sound events, but will also put an equal emphasis on creating a memorable student-athlete experience, attracting spectators and generating excitement,” said CIS Chief Executive Officer, Marg McGregor.
The University of Sherbrooke has submitted bids in no less than four sports, applying to host the CIS cross country championships in 2010 and 2011, track and field in 2011 and 2012, men’s volleyball in 2012 and women’s volleyball in 2013.

Calgary and Laval put their names in for three sports apiece.

In cross country, Sherbrooke was the lone university to bid for the 2010 national races and is up against Laval for 2011. Sherbrooke has previously hosted the event in 1985 and 2001, while Laval hosted in 1988, 2006 and 2008.

In women’s soccer, Ă山ǿĽé was the lone institution to bid for the 2011 championship while Victoria is the only suitor for 2012. Ă山ǿĽé organized the inaugural CIS women’s soccer championship back in 1987, hosted for a second time in 1993 and co-hosted with Montreal in 2003 and 2004. The tournament was held at Victoria in 1998 and 2006.

In men’s soccer, Victoria bid for 2011, Laval and Ă山ǿĽé vie to host the 2012 tournament, and Western Ontario bid for both years. Victoria was the host in 1975 and 1999, and Ă山ǿĽé in 1982, 1987 and 1998 before co-hosting with Montreal in 2003 and 2004. The tourney has never been held at Laval or Western.

In swimming, Calgary was the lone school to bid for the 2011 CIS meet. The U of C hosted the event back in 1973.

In track and field, Sherbrooke is the only suitor for 2011 but will compete with Manitoba for the 2012 national meet. Sherbrooke previously held the CIS meet in 1984, 1989, 2001 and 2002, while Manitoba hosted in 1988, 1990, 1992, 1995 and 2005.

In women’s volleyball, Regina is in the running for the 2012 championship, Calgary, McMaster, Toronto and Western Ontario all showed interest for both 2012 and 2013, while Sherbrooke hopes to host in 2013. The CIS tournament was held at the U of C in 1971, 1991, 2006 and 2007, at McMaster in 1979, at the U of T in 1996, and at Sherbrooke in 1988. Western and Regina have never hosted the event.

In men’s volleyball, Sherbrooke threw its name in for the 2012 CIS tourney, Calgary, Queen’s and Waterloo all vie to host both in 2012 and 2013, while Laval and Saskatchewan will compete for hosting rights in 2013. The championship has been held at Calgary in 1970, 1989 and from 1996 to 1998, at Waterloo in 1977, at Laval a record 10 times (1972, 1975, 1984, 1991, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2008) and at Saskatchewan in 1980. Sherbrooke and Queen’s have never had the event.
