Martlets trio elevated to all-star status in volleyball

MONTREAL - Jennifer Thomson, Kelsey Irwin and Marcela Mansure, three members of the Ã山ǿ¼é women's volleyball team, have earned all-conference honours in voting conducted by the four head coaches in the Quebec conference.

Thomson, a 5-foot-7 senior power-hitter from Rosemere, Que., and Irwin, a 5-foot-11 senior middle blocker from Vancouver, were both named to the first team. Mansure, a sophomore setter from Rio de Janiero, earned second-team status.

It was the fifth consecutive year that Thomson - a 23-year-old veteran who is completing a master's degree in education -- received all-star status in the league. She finished third among league leaders in digs (3.71), fifth in kills (3.02 per game), seventh in service aces (0.37) and eighth in hitting percentage (.226).

Irwin, a 21-year-old political science and sociology major, earns all-star honours for the third time but it marked her inaugural appearance on the first squad. She had a career-best campaign, finishing second in hitting percentage (.298), third in kills per game (3.32) and fourth in stuff blocks (0.90).

Mansure, a 22-year-old occupational therapy major, ranked second among league leaders in assists per game with an average of 8.93. She also contributed 142 digs, 18 kills and 13 aces.
