OTTAWA – Ann-Sophie Bettez of Sept Iles, Que., and Alyssa Cecere of Brossard, Que, each tallied twice as No.1-ranked Ã山ǿ¼é rallied for three unanswered goals in the final 10 minutes to outlast Ottawa 6-4 in women’s hockey, Saturday.

It was Ã山ǿ¼é’s 27th consecutive win against Canadian university opponents but the most goals allowed by the Martlets in 80 games against CIS teams, dating back to a 4-1 loss to Laurier on March 11, 2006.

The Martlets led 2-0 on goals by defenceman Chantal Gauvin, a native of Dollard des Ormeaux, Que., and Cecere, but Ottawa came to life when Erika Pouliot beat Ã山ǿ¼é netminder Gabrielle Smith at 12:29 of the opening period. That goal snapped Ã山ǿ¼é’s regular season shutout sequence at 258 minutes and 40 seconds. The CIS record, held by Ã山ǿ¼é, is 363:09.

Three minutes after Pouliot had narrowed the gap to 2-1, Vanessa Davidson re-established the two-goal cushion with a shorthanded effort, which appeared to snuff out any chance of a Gee-Gees comeback. However, Ottawa exploded to go ahead 4-3 on goals by Joelle Charlebois at 12:11 and Jodi Reinholcz at 14:45 of the middle period and Kayla Hottot at 2:30 of the final stanza.

Cecere tied the contest at 4-4 before the midway mark of the final period, then Bettez sealed the deal, putting pucks past goalkeeper Jessika Audet at 10:38 and 18:17.

Ã山ǿ¼é has now won 13 consecutive games over the Gee-Gees, dating back to a 2-1 loss at Ottawa on Feb. 10, 2007 and own a 27-2-1 record in their last 30 meetings versus Ottawa.
The win also catapulted Ã山ǿ¼é (4-0) ahead of Ottawa (3-1-0-1) and into the division lead for the first time this season. Ã山ǿ¼é is off until Nov. 8, when they will make a return trip to the nation’s capital, to take on the Carleton Ravens. They have won 27 consecutive games over Carleton and own a 39-0-1 lifetime record against the Ravens with 24 shutouts.

MARTLET MURMURS: The Ã山ǿ¼é women were once missing the services of goaltender Charline Labonté and rearguard Catherine Ward, plus head coach Peter Smith, who were with the Canadian national team at a three-day training camp in Pierrefonds, Que. The trio will be heading to Lake Placid, N.Y., later this week for the Four Nations Cup tourney, Nov. 4-9. Assistant coach Amey Doyle handled the team in his absence and upped her career record to 19-1-1 when filling in for Smith behind the Ã山ǿ¼é bench.
