Martindale nets hat in win, Davidson breaks record

Published: 29 November 2008

MONTREAL – Rebecca Martindale, a senior from Kingston, Ont., netted a hat-trick as the No.1-ranked Ã山ǿ¼é women’s hockey team spanked No.10-Ottawa 9-0 at McConnell Arena, Saturday.

It was Ã山ǿ¼é’s 33rd straight victory over Canadian university opponents and the 14th consecutive conquest over the Gee-Gees, dating back to a 2-1 loss in the nation’s capital on Feb. 10, 2007. The Martlets own a 28-2-1 record in their last 31 meetings versus Ottawa.

Catherine Ward, a third-year rearguard from Town of Mt. Royal, Que., assisted on four goals and freshman Marie-Andrée Leclerc-Auger of Sherbrooke registered a goal and three helpers.

Ann-Sophie Bettez of Sept Iles, Que., scored a pair of goals and now sits fourth among the CIS national scoring leaders with a 10-14-24 record in seven games. She is only three points shy of CIS leader Marieve Provost of the Moncton Aigles Bleus but has played four fewer contests.

Ã山ǿ¼é outshot the Gee-Gees 48-26 as netminder Charline Labonté earned her third shutout in four regular season starts and her 44th whitewash in 95 career starts with the Martlets. The native of Boisbriand, Que., leads the nation with a stingy 0.25 goals-against average and a stellar .985 save percentage. She improved to 4-0 on the regular season, 12-2 overall and 83-9-3 over her three seasons with the Martlets.

Senior Vanessa Davidson of Kirkland, Que., a two-time league MVP, also registered a goal and a helper -- to break the school's all-time assist record of 94 that was shared by Sophie Acheson and Shauna Denis. With an overall career total of 103-95-198 in 145 contests, Davidson is now the school's all-time leader in goals, assists and points.

Rounding out the scoring for Ã山ǿ¼é was sophomore Alessandra Lind-Kenny of Calgary and freshman Lainie Smith of Aurora, Ont.

The second-place Gee-Gees, which dropped to 4-3-1, will host the Syracuse University Orange, Sunday at 2 p.m.  The Martlets improved to 17-2 overall, including a 7-0 record in the Quebec league and will play next at Concordia’s Theresa Humes tourney, Jan. 2-4.
