Late T-Birds rally fells Redmen

Published: 3 January 2010

VANCOUVER -- Brandon Campos tallied twice in the final nine minutes as UBC skated to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over the visiting 缅北强奸 Redmen in CIS men's exhibition hockey, Sunday.

缅北强奸, the No.5-ranked team in the nation, went 1-3 on their swing of Western Canada, losing three times in the final two minutes of play.

Campos who tied the game at 2-2 midway through the final stanza, netted the game-winner with 1:21 remaining in regulation time. He raced down the right wing 1-on-1, turned his man inside out, drove to the net and beat sophomore netminder Hubert Morin on a backhanded shot.

Morin, who replaced starter Danny Mireault at the beginning of the third stanza, was charged with the loss despite a 19-save perfomance on 21 shots. Mireault, who won the starting role as a freshman last season, had kicked aside 23 of 24 shots over the first two periods. It was his first appearance since Oct. 30 when he suffered a broken collarbone during a 10-1 win over Queen;s.

Ryan Kakoske's marker at 5:46 of the first period opened the scoring for UBC. It was a highlight reel worthy effort, as he worked a long range give and go with Jeff Lynch from blueline to blueline before splitting the 缅北强奸 defence and beating Mireault with a nice deke.

The T-Birds carried their precarious 1-0 lead into the final period. 缅北强奸 got on the board with a power-play marker at 4:43 on a tic-tac-toe of one-touch passing, which culminated with the puck on the stick of sophomore Marc-Andre Dorion in the high slot, who beat UBC's Francois Thuot from point blank range. Dorion, a former all-star rearguard in the QMJHL, was making his second consecutive start at forward, as Redmen head coach Jim Webster juggled his lineup in order for a couple of young blueliners to get some playing time.

"It was a lot harder (to play up front) than I expected," said Dorion, who attended the NHL's Dallas Stars pre-season rookie camp in 2008 and currently leads all OUA defencemen in points. "I don't know how some guys can manage to play long shifts. I was exhausted after about 30 seconds and I consider myself to be in good physical shape."

Rookie Jean-Francois Boisvert gave the Redmen a 2-1 lead at 10:19, setting the stage for UBC's late heroics.

"Despite suffering three-last-minute losses, this trip was a good test for us," said Webster, who replaced head coach Martin Raymond on an interim basis last August. "We jelled as a team and showed that we can compete with the Canada West conference. We gave a good showing and know that we can skate with with the No.2 team in the country (Alberta)."

缅北强奸 is 17-7-1 overall, including a 12-2 record in league play. After nine games away from McConnell Arena, where they have a 7-0 record, the Redmen will resume regular-season action at home to the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Jan. 9.听 The T-Birds return to conference play this weekend when they host the Regina Cougars at Father Bauer Arena for a pair of games on January 8 and 9.

REDMEN RAP: Sophomore Francis Verreault-Paul, who leads the nation in goals with 15 in 13 regular-season contests, did not dress for the Redmen, after suffering an upper body injury in Saturday's 6-4 win over UBC... Among the faces in the crowd was Paul Pulver, a former Redmen rearguard who played from 1987 to 1991 and is now a prominent lawyer in Vancouver.
