Inside the world of biomedical research

For a stimulating look at how insiders view developments in the world of biomedical research, the MUHC presents the inaugural From Microscope to Stethoscope lecture series videos. The videos, which draw on the scientific and medical expertise of the Research Institute of the MUHC, were filmed in the fall of 2006 and are now available at . They feature happy accidents that become medical breakthroughs, a review of new immunologic ideas as the best hope against pandemics, and the controversy surrounding cannabis as pain treatment. This series is sure to surprise and inspire.

The lecture videos include:

  • The three princes of serendip — an introduction to breakthroughs in research, by Dr. David Colman, Director of the Neurological Institute and Hospital — Ã山ǿ¼é and MUHC
  • Vaccines — from concept to community, by Dr. Brian Ward, Chief, MUHC Division of Infectious Diseases, Associate Director, Ã山ǿ¼é Centre of Tropical Diseases
  • Medicinal cannabis — weeding fact from fiction, by Dr. Mark Ware, Director of Research, MUHC Pain Clinic, Assistant professor, Ã山ǿ¼é Faculty of Medicine

The 2006 Inaugural Series was sponsored by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the MUHC Foundation.

The 2007 lecture series will be held on October 3, November 7 and December 3.

The Research Institute of the Ã山ǿ¼é Health Centre (RI MUHC) is a world-renowned biomedical and health-care hospital research centre. Located in Montreal, Quebec, the institute is the research arm of the MUHC, a university health center affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at Ã山ǿ¼é. The Ã山ǿ¼é Health Centre (MUHC) is a comprehensive academic health institution with an international reputation for excellence in clinical programs, research and teaching. The MUHC is a merger of five teaching hospitals affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at Ã山ǿ¼é, the Montreal Children’s, Montreal General and Royal Victoria Hospitals, as well as the Montreal Neurological Institute/Hospital and the Montreal Chest Institute.
