MONTREAL --听 Anneth Him-Lazarenko of the 缅北强奸 Martlets has been voted player of the year in the Quebec University Basketball League and earned first-team all-star honours along with teammate Marie-Eve Martin of Granby, Que. 缅北强奸's Ryan Thorne was named coach of the year and others honoured from the Martlets included Fran莽oise Charest of Quebec City, who made the second all-star squad and Roya Assadi of Vancouver, B.C., who earned all-rookie honours.

Him-Lazarenko, a 5-foot-10 forward from Laval, Que., captured the conference scoring title with a 15.6 points per game average and was second among rebounders at 8.6 per game. The 23-year-old education junior, who is majoring in secondary social sciences, also registered the top field-goal shooting percentage (.541), making 99 of 183 attempts. The 2008-09 rookie of the year also captured the CIS Tracy MacLeod Award last year for determination, perseverance and courage. In 2008, she was a highly-recruited all-star out of Vanier College.

Thorne, a 39-year-old resident of Chateauguay, Que., is in his eighth season as bench boss of the Martlets. He coached the team to the regular season pennant with a 13-3 record, their highest win total since 1996-97. He also guided 缅北强奸 to the best offensive and defensive records in the conference. Thorne was previously honoured as the league's top coach in 2005-06.

Martin, a 5-foot-7 guard, was fourth among league scoring leaders (13.3 ppg), first in 3-point shooting (40.3 per cent), making 50 of 124 attempts and seventh in field-goal shooting (41.1). The 21-year-old sociology sophomore also ranked second in minutes played (33.6 per game).

Charest, a 5-foot-6 point-guard, was 15th in scoring (9.4 ppg), first in assists (4.6), third in free-throw shooting (82.9), ninth in steals (1.6), first in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.6) and second in minutes played (33.6). She is a 22-year-old industrial relations sophomore.
听
Assadi, a 19-year-old science freshman, averaged 5.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per game with 20.5 minutes of court time. The 5-foot-10 guard shot 43.8 from the field, 52.0 from three-point range and 75.0 per cent from the foul-line.

The league's other major award winners included Concordia's Kaylah Barrett of Brampton, Ont., who was named as the both the conference's defensive player of the year and the rookie of the year. A freshman majoring in religious studies, she had a league-best steals-per-game average (2.9) and was second in offensive rebounding with 3.8 per game. She was fourth overall in total boards per game with 7.6 while ranking ninth in scoring with an 11.5 average.

Laval's Marie-Michelle Genois of Cap Sant茅, Que,, won the conference nomination for the CIS Sylvia Sweeney Award, for combining academic success with athletic excellence and community service. The two-time player-of-the-year award winner, she finished first among league leaders in rebounding (10.6), blocked shots (1.6) and defensive rebounds (7.4). A master's student in cellular and molecular biology, she earned Academic All-Canadian honours with an overall 4.18 grade point average on a scale of 4.33. A former star with College Ste. Foy, she has been a guest athlete at many events, such as the Rimouski Basketball Camp, the Portneuf school board charity golf tournament and the Dribblons avec c艙ur Event (Dribble with Heart) at Dominique-Savio elementary school.

Bishop's forward Jessy Roy of Val-d'Or, Que., is the conference nominee for the CIS Tracy MacLeod Award that honours determination, perseverance and courage. The senior starter missed the second half of last season with injuries to her shoulder and knee but resumed play this season and earned second-team all-star status. She closed the campaign as the sixth leading scorer with 12.3 points per game. She was also ranked third in the assists (3.6 per game) second in steals (2.4 per game).

Rounding out the major award winners is Mario Boutin who was named official of the year.

Playoffs on this week's menu
A pair of sudden-death semifinals are on the agenda Wednesday night in听 women's university basketball action.
听
The Laval Rouge et Or will travel down Autoroute 20 to face the 缅北强奸 Martlets at Love Competition Hall (7 pm). 缅北强奸 has won three of the four regular season matchups against the six-time champions in the last decade. 缅北强奸's last league title was in 1995-96.
听
The other semifinal pits the visiting Concordia Stingers against the UQAM Citadins at 7 pm. UQAM was the winner on three of four games against Concordia this season and home court has been an true advantage for UQAM, which has not lost to the Stingers since January 26, 2007.
听
Both semifinal winners will tip-off in the league championship game, Saturday night at the home of the highest remaining team. The champion will move on to the CIS women's basketball championship at the University of Windsor, March 18-20, while the loser will have a shot at redemption as they head to Western Canada to participate in one of three new CIS regional play-in tournaments.
