MONTREAL - Caroline Hill of Dorval, Que., tied a school record with seven points, including a four-goal performance, as No.1-ranked 缅北强奸 routed Ottawa 10-0 at McConnell Arena, Saturday. 听It was the 99th straight victory for the Martlets against a Quebec University Hockey League opponent.
All-Canadian goaltender Charline 尝补产辞苍迟茅, a senior from Boisbriand, Que., made 17 saves for the whitewash, upping her CIS career record total to 37 shutouts in 65 regular season starts since joining the Martlets in 2006.
缅北强奸, which led 4-0 after the opening period and 7-0 after two, enjoyed a 41-17 territorial advantage in shots on net.
"We had a really good start today, which is an area where we've struggled a bit this year," said Martlets head coach Peter Smith. "We worked hard, made good plays, had a lot of good bounces and got good results. This was one of the few games where we played with a sense of urgency from start to finish. We ignored the scoreboard and went hard. There was a growth stage that we went through today and that's what makes successful teams win."
Hill, who has been battling flu-like symptoms since returning from Turkey earlier in the week where she helped Canada win a gold medal at the world university FISU Games, matched the 缅北强奸 single-game points record set by teammate Ann-Sophie Bettez in a 16-1 win over Concordia on Nov. 15, 2008.
Hill didn't even see her fourth goal go in as she had dumped the puck in from outside the blueline at the end of a shift and headed back toward the bench. Just as she stepped off the ice, she was informed that she had scored as Gee-Gees goaltender Stephanie Auger, misplayed the dump-in and redirected the puck between her legs and into her own net. Auger, who had relieved starter Tia Marley after the first period, was yanked a few minutes later.
"Carly had great step today," said Smith. "She is a smart player who sees the ice well, anticipates the play and moves the puck well. Despite being sick, she worked hard from her first shift to her last one and it really paid off. "
Bettez, who also played for Canada in Turkey, tallied twice and added a pair of helpers. Freshman Katia Clement-Heydra of St. Bruno de Montarville, Que., contributed two markers and set up another. The 5-foot-7 centre took over the conference scoring lead with an 11-14-25 record in 18 games. She is actually tied with teammate Cathy Chartrand (7-18-25) but has more goals. Chartrand, who picked up a pair of assists, continues to lead all CIS rearguards in points.
Singles went to rookie Leslie Oles of Beaconsfield, Que., and senior Jordanna Peroff of Keswick, Ont. Rearguard Gillian Ferrari of Thornhill, Ont., assisted on the first three goals.
The Martlets are 18-0 in league play and can reach the centennial mark in consecutive wins when they visit the Montreal Carabins (8-7-2) on Feb. 18.听 Ottawa, which dropped to 6-11-1 and is now tied with Carleton (4-8-5) for the fourth and final playoff spot, plays host to Montreal on Feb. 19.
MARTLET MURMURS: 缅北强奸 has racked up 31 consecutive victories over Ottawa and have a 44-2-1 lifetime record against the Gee-Gees, who were the last QUHL team to defeat the Martlets when they registered a 2-1 decision in Ottawa on Feb. 7, 2007... The 10-goal explosion was 缅北强奸's highest offensive output since an 11-2 win over Concordia in the conference semifinals March 4, 2009... 听In regular-season play, it was their most productive offensive showing since a 10-0 conquest over the Stingers on Jan. 17, 2009... Martlets junior Lainie Smith was awarded a penalty shot after being tripped with 缅北强奸 leading 5-0 midway through the middle frame but just fired high on Auger... The Martlets are the least penalized team in the nation with an average of 6.56 minutes per game. They are also tops in defence with a stingy 1.06 goals-against average ... 尝补产辞苍迟茅 leads all CIS goalies in shutouts (7), goals-against average (0.61), save percentage (.961) and winning percentage (1.000).
