MONTREAL -- The Ã山ǿ¼é golf team had mixed results at the UQAM-hosted tournament played at the Irish links course of the Ile de Montreal Golf Club, on Sept. 22-23. This was the third of four events in the Quebec university circuit played under the auspices of the Reseau du Sport Etudiant de Quebec and Golf Quebec.

"Our men's team had a difficult time on Day 1 as the monster Irish course was true to its reputation and gave our players fits on the course," said Bob Dubeau, head coach at Ã山ǿ¼é.

With only Ryan Boyd breaking 80 on the first day, with a 77, the Redmen found itself in seventh position with a combined gross score of 338, dropping to sixth place in the cumulative scoring after three tournaments.ÌýAfter both rounds, Boyd finished 17th at 158 and Brian Neill was 23rd with a score of 160.

The second day, there was a significant improvement as Brian Neill and freshman Ben Miguel shot 74 and 75, respectively, leading the team to a 310 total and back to fifth position overall, only 13 shots behind fourth-place Sherbrooke. The top four teams in the men's division qualify for the national championships next May in Victoria. With 36 holes to play at Royal Quebec,Ìý Oct. 3-4, the team is confident that it can pass Sherbrooke and gain the final qualifying position.

The men's team competition was captured by Laval with an impressive 32-shot margin over the Montreal Carabins and 52 shots ahead of UQTR.

The women's team title was also captured by Laval with a nine-shot lead over Montreal. The Ã山ǿ¼é Martlets were forced out of the team scoring as only two members were able to play, due to academic conflicts for two other members of the team. To qualify for the women's team title, schools must be composed of at least three players for their score to count. As scoring is cumulative over the eight rounds, failure to post a three-person score in any event automatically eliminates the team from the overall championship.

"This situation is a large disappointment to the players and the coaching staff," said Dubeau.

The individual men's event was won by Maxime Merengere of the Universite de Quebec at Outaouis. He won in a playoff with Laval's Ugo Coussaud, the previous week's champion in the Ã山ǿ¼é tourney at Owl's Head. Both players had 2-over-par totals of 142.

The women's individual champion is Montreal's Laurence Mignaud. Her scores of 70 and 77 bettered Sabrina Sapone of Laval by four shots. Ã山ǿ¼é's Dayvi Khanna finished sixth. Teammate Frederique Bovet tied for ninth position, four shots behind. Both played an excellent round on the second day, each shooting 80.

The RSEQ circuit championship tourney will be hosted by Laval at the Royal Quebec Club, Oct. 3-4.
