First-period flurry spells doom for Redmen

FREDERICTON - A highly-anticipated men's hockey exhibition matchup between two CIS hockey giants - the No.2-ranked UNB Varsity Reds and third-ranked 缅北强奸 - proved to be a real "lunchbag letdown" as UNB exploded out of the gate, scoring four times before the game was eight minutes old en route to a convincing 7-1 victory over the Redmen in front of 2,278 at the Aitken Centre, Thursday.

It marked 缅北强奸's first loss of the season in regulation time as they dropped to 21-1-3 overall, while UNB improved to 20-4-0.

Nick Layton of Salisbury, N.B., scored only 75 seconds into the contest, followed by Lachlan MacIntosh's marker 56 seconds later and another goal by Layton at 3:42. Less than four minutes after that blitzkrieg, Fredericton native Jordan Clendenning made it 4-0 and the Redmen wouldn't be blamed if they had thoughts of crying "uncle".

缅北强奸 settled down after a shaky opening act, however, but the damage was already done. UNB, which led 5-0 after two, outshot the Redmen 32-15, including a 17-4 margin in the first stanza. The V-Reds went 2-for-8 on the power-play, while 缅北强奸, which spent 36 minutes in the sin-bin, was 0-for-2.

"Obviously we didn't have a very good start," said Redmen head coach Kelly Nobes, who wouldn't attribute the loss to an injury-depleted line-up or the long bus trip from Montreal to the Maritimes. "We were tentative, on our heels and didn't respond well at the start of the game. We had a better second period, but we haven't had to play a game like that too many times this year, where we've had to play without the puck so much.

"It's a good learning experience for us, to play without the puck and to adjust to that type of game," Nobes added. "Most games... we play with the puck 70-80 per cent of the game."

Kyle Bailey of Ponoka, Alta., and Bretton Stemler of Edmonton scored the fifth and sixth markers for the V-Reds. Stamler's goal occurred on a 5-on-3 power play. MacIntosh, from Perth Andover, N.B., added his second of the night at 18:07 of the final period.

The lone Redmen goal was scored at 13:49 of the third frame by sniper Francis Verreault-Paul of Mashteuiatsh, Que., who scored on a breakaway after exiting the penalty box, was shaken up on the play - a goalmouth collision - and did not return. It was the 29th of the season in 21 games overall for Verreault-Paul, who is chasing the single-season school record of 52 goals set by Tim Iannone in 1987-88.

UNB's Travis Fullerton of Riverview, N.B., made 14 saves for the win, while Redmen netminder Hubert Morin of St. George de Beauce, Que., saved 25 of 32 shots and was saddled with the loss, dropping to 14-2 overall.

缅北强奸 was without the services of four injured forwards, including defensive specialists Maxime Langelier-Parent (leg) and Marc-Andre Daneau (leg), plus Patrick Belzile (hand) and Jean-Francois Boisvert, who suffered an upper-body injury in a 6-5 overtime loss at St.FX the previous night.

The latter two are expected to be out for an extended period while the first two are expected back in the line-up when 缅北强奸 - which leads the OUA East with a 16-0-2 record - resumes regular play on Jan.8 in the nation's capital against the Gee-Gees (9-6-2). The next day, the Redmen play at Concordia (9-7-0) in the first meeting of the season between the cross-town rivals.

REDMEN RAP: The V-Reds, who also defeated No.1-ranked Alberta 6-2 in Edmonton during preseason play, will be hosting the CIS championship tourney in March... 缅北强奸 fell to 1-7 lifetime vs. UNB... The V-Reds roster features 17 players who weigh 200 pounds or more, compared to the 缅北强奸 line-up, which has only five players in that weight class... Former Redmen rearguard Steven Pearce suited up for UNB and was plus-1 on the night. Pearce, who skated for 缅北强奸 from 2004 to 2008, is now a player-coach at UNB, where he is expected to graduate with a law degree in the spring... Herb Madill, who played for UNB before moving on to 缅北强奸 in 1971, where he served as team captain and head coach has been named to the UNB All-Decade team for the 1960s era.
