MONTREAL – Freshman right-winger Francis Verrault-Paul scored twice and assisted on another as Ã山ǿ¼é dumped ²Ï³Ü±ð±ð²Ô’s 4-1 in men’s university hockey at McConnell Arena, Saturday.

The Gaels, who recently dropped the moniker "Golden" from their nickname, had to contend with a near-sellout, raucous crowd of 834, on hand to help celebrate the Friends of Ã山ǿ¼é Hockey Homecoming. They thoroughly enjoyed a spirited contest, which featured 102 penalty minutes.

Verrault-Paul, a 5-foot-9, 169-pound sparkplug from Mashteuiatsh, in the Saguenay-Lac Saint-Jean region of Quebec, opened the scoring at 14:53 of the first period and gave the Redmen a 2-1 lead with what proved to be the game-winner at 16:52 of the middle stanza.

The kinesiology major then set up Guillaume Doucet’s third-period marker to put Ã山ǿ¼é ahead 4-1 with 13 minutes remaining.

Late in the game, Verrault-Paul received an automatic ejection for a hit-from-behind minor penalty. It was the second time in as many games that he had incurred such a penalty, which means that the Redmen scoring leader (7GP: 4-3-7) miss Saturday’s Ã山ǿ¼é-²Ï³Ü±ð±ð²Ô’s rematch in Kingston due to an automatic one-game suspension.

The other Redmen marker was scored by senior Marko Kovacevic, a native of Serbia, who had given Ã山ǿ¼é a 3-1 lead on a power play early in the third period.

Matthew Hill, a rookie from Creighton, Sask.,  tallied the lone goal for the Gaels, tying the score at 1-1 early in the middle period.

Freshman netminder Danny Mireault of Notre Dame des Prairies, Que., earned his second win in as many nights and improved his record to 2-3-0 as Ã山ǿ¼é outshot the Gaels 41-27. Brady Morrison of Thamesville, Ont., kept the game close with 37 saves in a losing cause and fell to 3-6-0.

It was Ã山ǿ¼é’s 12th consecutive victory over the Gaels and 52nd of the last 57 meetings. The Redmen lead their all-time series versus ²Ï³Ü±ð±ð²Ô’s with a 105-50-2 record, dating back more than a century to 1895.

Ã山ǿ¼é, which improved to 2-4-1, will head to Kingston for a rematch with the Gaels on Nov. 15, then play at Carleton on Sunday afternoon.

REDMEN RAP: One of the Gaels, upset with the way events unfolded, smashed a glass window in the dressing room after the game... A post-game reception at the McConnell Arena Alumni Lounge featured the presentation of commemorative rings to members of last-year’s ²Ï³Ü±ð±ð²Ô’s Cup championship team, Ã山ǿ¼é’s first league title in 62 years.  In what was arguably the most successful turnout ever for the Friends of Ã山ǿ¼é Hockey Homecoming, some three dozen former players were on hand for the festivities.

Among those that participated were former captains Martin Raymond, Mike Nelson, Dave Gourde, Stephane Ducharme, Ken Covo, Dan McLean, Pierre-Antoine Paquet and Luc Fournier… Other ex-Redmen spotted in the crowd included Charlie Lafontaine, Mathieu Poitras, Shawn Shewchuk, Louis-Simon Allaire, Charles Gauthier, Jocelyn Perrault, Pierre Gendron, Dave Gourde, Kyle Hickey, Jay McMullan, Mike Farmer, Richard Walker, George Jamieson, Dan Gubiani, Ben Rajotte, David Lizotte, Paul Theriault, Pierre-Luc Gosselin, Sebastien Langlois, Joel Bergeron, Dave Boucher,  David Guenette, Ben Lessard, Stephane Beaudoin, Dave Bahl and Stephane Fortin… Apologies to anyone who may have been missed.
