Eighteen Ã山ǿ¼éians headed for Vancouver Olympics
Ìý
Ìý
MONTREAL -Ìý Sixteen graduates and two students from Ã山ǿ¼é University have been named to participate at the Winter Games in Vancouver, Feb. 12-28. The 18-member entourage, which includes five athletes, surpasses the previous Winter Olympics high of 10 Ã山ǿ¼éians who participated at the 2006 Games in Turin.
Ìý
(NOTE: A tentative schedule of when they are slated to compete is posted at the end)
Ìý
Jennifer Heil of Spruce Grove, Alta., was officially named Monday to the Canada's Olympic freestyle ski squad. The part-time management student joins four women's hockey players, one short-track speedskater, two coaches and three administrators that will be serving in an official capacity at the Games.
Ìý
Aside from Heil, the only other "current" Ã山ǿ¼é student named to date is goaltender Charline Labonté, a physical education junior from Boisbriand, Que. Both are on a leave of absence from their studies.
Ìý
Among the graduates participating as athletes are defenceman Catherine Ward (BCom'09) from Town of Mt. Royal, Que., and goaltender Kim St-Pierre (BEd'05) of Chateauguay, Que., both with the Canadian women's hockey team, plus speedskater Tyson Heung (BEd'05), a Montreal teacher originally from Brampton, Ont., who is competing for Germany.
Ìý
Other grads with Team Canada include Mike Babcock (BEd'86) of Saskatoon, who will coach theÌýmen's hockey team, Peter Smith (BEd'79) of Lachine, Que., an assistant coach with the women's hockey program and Stephen Gough (BA'98), a coach with the short-track speedskaters.
Ìý
Other officials include IOC member Richard Pound (BCom'62, BCL'67) of Montreal and IOCÌýdirector of legal affairs Howard Stupp (BEng'78, LLB'83, BCL'83) of Laval, Que., in addition to COC director of sports services Derek Covington (MA'92) and VANOC's chief information officer Ward Chapin (BA '75), plus physcians Dr. Connie Lebrun (MDCM, 1981), Dr. Greg Berry (Medicine, MDCM '91), Dr. Tarek Razek (Medicine, MDCM '93), Dr. Kosar Khwaja (Medicine, MDCM '99) and Dr. Pierre Guy (Medicine, MDCM '89), plus sports psychologist Dr. Wayne Halliwell (MA'73).
Ìý
Over the past century, 106 Ã山ǿ¼é students have gone on to Olympic glory and they have won a combined total of 24 Olympic medals, including five gold, eight silver and 11 bronze.
Ìý
Topping the list is Dr. Phil Edwards, a graduate from the faculty of medicine. Edwards won a whopping five bronze medals while representing Canada at the Summer Games in Amsterdam (1928), Los Angeles (1932) and Berlin (1936).
Ìý
He was the only Canadian Olympian to win medals in three Olympic Games until short-track speed-skater Marc Gagnon equalled the feat in 2002. His Canadian record of five Olympic medals stood for 66 years before it was finally matched by Gagnon.
Ìý
Only three Ã山ǿ¼é students have won Olympic gold -- swimmer George Hodgson (two golds at the 1912 Stockholm Games), Kim St-Pierre (gold at the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City and in 2006 at Turin) and freestyle skier Jennifer Heil, also at the 2006 Games.
Ìý
Curious about other Ã山ǿ¼é Olympians? Read on for the names of past and present student athletes at Ã山ǿ¼é who have participated in winter and summer Olympic Games.
