OTTAWA (CIS) – There is no movement at the top in the first CIS rankings of 2009.

The Simon Fraser Clan (women’s basketball), Carleton Ravens (men’s basketball), Ã山ǿ¼é Martlets (women’s hockey), Alberta Golden Bears (men’s hockey and men’s volleyball), Montreal Carabins (women’s volleyball), Western Ontario Mustangs (women’s track & field) and Manitoba Bisons (men’s track & field) all hold on to their No. 1 status in the first national polls of the second half of the season.

In women’s basketball, top-ranked Simon Fraser (12-1) resumed conference play this past weekend with convincing wins over Brandon, 84-58, and Regina, 80-63. The Clan could be in tough this week as they host No. 9 Victoria (8-5) on Friday before paying a visit to cross-town rival and defending national champion UBC (5-8) on Saturday.

In men’s hoops, No. 1 Carleton (7-1) will resume conference action at home this weekend with duels against a pair of solid OUA East opponents, Toronto (6-3) and Ryerson (5-4). Last weekend, the Ravens won the 18th Rod Shoveller Memorial tournament at Dalhousie with victories over 2007-08 CIS finalist Acadia, 87-60, No. 10 Dalhousie, 69-57, and No. 3 St. Francis Xavier, 83-61.

In women’s hockey, top-ranked and reigning CIS champion Ã山ǿ¼é (7-0) gets back to regular season action on Saturday against Carleton (3-5). Last weekend, the Martlets dominated the Theresa Humes tournament at Concordia defeating Queen’s, 4-0, No. 10 Ottawa, 8-2, and No. 8 Toronto, 9-0. Ã山ǿ¼é extended its win streak against CIS opponents to 36 games dating back to last season and is 9-0 this year against Top-10 rivals, outscoring those teams by a 62-12 margin.

In men’s hockey, top-seeded and defending national champion Alberta (11-2-1) resumes conference play this weekend with a home-and-away doubleheader against provincial rival Calgary (6-9-1). Last weekend, the Golden Bears went 2-0 at the SAIT Challenge Cup edging Regina, 6-5 in a shootout, and host SAIT, 4-3.

In women’s volleyball, top-ranked and reigning CIS finalist Montreal (15-0) hosts No. 8 Laval (11-4) and Sherbrooke (8-7) this weekend as the regular season resumes in Quebec. Over the holidays, the Carabins travelled to Barbados where they won the International Invitational for the second straight year.

In men’s volleyball, No. 1 and defending national champion Alberta (10-0) gets back into conference action this weekend with a pair of road games against Saskatchewan (0-10). Over the break, the Bears went 2-1 during a California tour, defeating U.C. Irvine in four sets before splitting a two-game series against Long Beach State, 3-0 and 1-3.
