Chartrand tallies twice as Martlets put Ravens season on ice

Published: 26 February 2010

MONTREAL - Cathy Chartrand of Lac Nominingue, Que., scored twice to spark a three-goal outburst in the second period and that was enough as the No.1-ranked 缅北强奸 women's hockey team skated to a 3-0 victory over Carleton at McConnell Arena on Friday, to sweep their best-of-three semifinal series. 缅北强奸 won the opener 2-0 last Wednesday.

The series victory marked 缅北强奸's 82nd consecutive conquest and automatically qualified the Martlets for a trip to the CIS national championship tournament in Antigonish, N.S., March 11-13 - their eighth consecutive appearance and 10th in 11 years.

The Martlets will now await the winner of the other QSSF semifinal series which is knotted at 1-1 after Ottawa's 7-3 upset over the Montreal Carabins, also on Friday. Both Quebec finalists qualify for the Nationals as a result of 缅北强奸 capturing the national title last year.

Rebecca Martindale of Kingston, Ont., scored what proved to be the game-winner at 6:05 of the middle period. It was the first of three power-play markers tallied by the Martlets, all in the second stanza.

Chartrand made it 2-0 four minutes later and added her second of the night at 18:40 as the Martlets ended up going 3-for-5 with the man-advantage.

"She's on a mission to get the job done this year," said Martlets head coach Amey Doyle of the 5-foot-10 rearguard who has lived in Catherine Ward's shadow for the past two seasons. Chartrand has emerged into the light this year, though, and was voted earlier in the week as the league's player of the year. She now has 20 goals and 53 points in 37 games overall. Both totals are single-season school records for a blueliner, breaking the previous marks held by Ward, who just helped Canada win a gold medal at the Vancouver Olympics.

"We've struggled a little over the past month when we only had one game to play on a weekend," said Chartrand, an education junior. "But now that we've had a few extra games over the last week or two, we've picked it up a notch and are back in gear. We accomplished our first goal to win the regular season and our second objective to qualify for Nationals. But we want to merit our berth at Nationals by winning the Quebec championship."

缅北强奸, which improved their lifetime record against Carleton to 51-0-1, outshot the Ravens 39-14, including a 16-4 advantage in the second period.

Goaltender Taylor Salisbury, a science freshman from Surrey, B.C., needed only 14 saves to register her second shutout of the playoffs and fifth in 15 starts overall, all of them victories. Valerie Charbonneau, a senior from Sudbury, Ont., who beat out Salisbury for all-star honours despite posting a 5-8 record, made 36 saves in a losing cause.

The Quebec league championship series, a best-of-three affair for the Dr. Ed Enos Trophy, is slated to open at McConnell Arena on Wednesday (March 3) at 7 p.m. 缅北强奸, which has won the conference championship banner in each of the last four seasons, will be gunning for their seventh Quebec title overall, dating back to their first in 1985.
