Chartrand sizzles, Carleton shrivels, streak at 39
MONTREAL – Defenceman Cathy Chartrand of Lac Nominingue, Que.,
netted a hat-trick, including the game-winner as No.1-ranked Ã山ǿ¼é
crushed Carleton 8-1 in women’s hockey at McConnell Arena, Sunday,
to extend their CIS win streak to 39 games.
It was also Ã山ǿ¼é’s 30th consecutive conquest over Carleton as the
Martlets improved to 42-0-1 lifetime against the Ravens with 24
shutouts.
Ã山ǿ¼é racked up a resounding 54-5 margin in shots, including a
14-0 margin in the middle period. Goaltender Charline Labonté of
Boisbriand, Que., was credited with only four saves to establish a
school record for the lowest save total ever recorded in a victory
by a Ã山ǿ¼é netminder. Labonté, who leads the nation with a stingy
0.57 goals-against average and a.965 save percentage, improved her
career record to 89-9-3 in a Ã山ǿ¼é jersey.
Chartrand, who stands 5-foot-10 and is a former member of the
Canadian national team, leads all CIS rearguards with seven goals
in just 10 games. Her 16 points ranks third among CIS defenceman,
behind Alberta’s Stephanie Ramsay (18GP: 4-17-21) and Laurier’s
Andrea Bevin (19GP: 6-14-20)
Freshman scoring sensation Marie-Andree Leclerc-Auger, a native of
Sherbrooke, tallied twice and now has 12 goals with 28 points in
only 10 games.
Ã山ǿ¼é, which led 1-0 after the opening period and 3-0 after two,
also got goals from rearguard Catherine Ward from town of Mount
Royal, Que., plus forward Amy Soberano of Toronto and Lainie Smith,
a rookie from Richmond Hill, Ont.
Jennifer Gordon of Perth, Ont., spoiled Labonté’s bid for a
shutout, making it 3-1 midway through the third period. Ravens
netminder Amanda Muhlig, from Sarnia, Ont., made 47 saves in a
losing cause.
The third-place Ravens (4-7-0) will host Ottawa, who sits second
with a 5-4-1 record, at Scotiabank Place on Wednesday, while
division-leading Ã山ǿ¼é (10-0-0) have a home rendezvous against the
Gee-Gees on Jan. 24.
MARTLET MURMURS: Sophomore Ann-Sophie Bettez, the Quebec league
scoring leader, had three assists and moved into a tie for
second-place among CIS scoring leaders… Despite the fact that she
has played seven fewer games, her 16-20-36 record in 10 contests is
tied with Alberta’s Miranda Miller (18-18-36) and just five behind
Alberta’s Tarin Podloski (14-27-41)… All-Canadian Catherine Ward,
who had two points in the game and now ranks fourth among all CIS
defenders in points with a 3-11-14 record, despite playing only
seven contests and missing three with commitments to the national
team… Ã山ǿ¼é was 1-for-4 on the power play and have now scored 59.8
per cent of their league goals on special teams. Of their 82
markers in conference play, the Martlets have struck for 47 on the
power play and two more while shorthanded.
