By Earl Zukerman
MONTREAL – Ã山ǿ¼é student Ann-Sophie Bettez of Sept-Iles, Que.,
and Sherbrooke track star Pierre Puyjalon have been named as the
Quebec Student Sports Federation’s athletes of the week for the
period ending Jan. 18, 2009.
It marks the fifth Quebec weekly conference selection of the season
for Ã山ǿ¼é athletes, including the third such nomination for
Bettez, who was also announced as the QSSF pick on Nov. 19, 2008
and Oct. 21, 2008. Other Ã山ǿ¼é picks include Martlet rearguard
Cathy Chartrand (Jan. 6, 2009) and Redmen goaltender Danny Mireault
(Nov. 18. 2008).
Bettez, a 5-foot-4, sophomore forward with the women’s hockey team,
scored five goals and added four assists as Ã山ǿ¼é swept both their
games over Concordia and Carleton last weekend.
In Saturday’s 10-0 road victory at Concordia, the 21-year-old
management major, tied single-game school records with seven points
and five goals. She also broke the team’s single-season record and
tied the Quebec university record for most goals scored.
Bettez, who was the CIS rookie of the year last season, leads the
Quebec league in scoring with an impressive 16-20-36 record in just
10 games. A product of Dawson College, Bettez currently ranks
second in the CIS national scoring race, five points back of the
leader who has played in seven more games.
