COTE St. LUC, Que., -- Freshman Chris Ames of Richmond, N.B., and Robert Garven, a senior from Saskatoon, each smacked home runs as 缅北强奸 opened a best-of-three semifinal playoff series with a resounding 9-3 victory over Concordia at Pierre Elliott Trudeau park, Sunday.

It marked the first time in team history that two different Redmen had homered in a game.

The Redmen lost the nightcap 5-2, however, forcing a rubber match on Thanksgiving Monday at noon for the right to advance to the divisional final series, in addition to a berth at the Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association national championship tournament in Moncton, N.B., Oct. 21-23.

In the opener, 缅北强奸 rallied from a 2-0 deficit when leadoff hitter Steven Warsh of Richmond Hill, Ont., stroked a two-run double to make it 2-2 in the third. The Redmen then exploded for four more runs the next inning, capped by Garven's solo shot to make the score 5-2. Garven, who hit eighth in the batting order, ended up 2-for-3 in the game, with three runs scored.

Ames, the designated hitter, then put 缅北强奸 comfortably ahead 7-2 in the fifth when he hammered a two-run shot. Warsh sealed the deal in the sixth inning, cashing in his third and fourth RBIs of the game with a two-run single. He registered a 2-for-4 performance at the plate.

Pitcher Alex Kechayan took the loss for the Stingers, who left an alarming 15 men on base.

缅北强奸 starter L.J. Aguinaga of Dollard des Ormeaux, Que., allowed two earned runs over 4.1 innings of work. He scattered two hits and struck out four but suffered bouts of wildness, walking five and hitting two batters. Landon Moore, a freshman from Ottawa, mopped up, allowing one earned run of a pair of hits. He walked three and hit one batter.

In the second game, Stingers starter Matthew Jacobson picked up the win, while 缅北强奸 starter Conrad Hall of Pte. Claire, Que., was saddled with the loss, allowing five hits and two earned runs in four innings. He struck out six and walked two.

Catcher Chris Haddad of Pierrefonds, Que., was 缅北强奸's only multi-hit performer. Batting from the seventh hole in the order, he went 2-for-3 with a double. Ames went 1-for-3 with an RBI double high off the fence, missing another homerun by inches.
