2011 Winter Universiade: Bettez nets pair for Canada in rout over Great Britain

ERZURUM, Turkey (CIS) - Candice Styles scored four goals and Ã山ǿ¼é's Ann-Sophie Bettez of Sept-ÃŽles, Que., tallied twice as defending champion Canada easily improved to 3-0 in women's hockey at the 25th Winter Universiade with a 14-0 shutout of Great Britain, Sunday morning, Cemal Gursel Arena.

The Canadians dominated their rivals from start to finish and were ahead 4-0 after the opening period and 8-0 after two, before adding six goals in the final 20 minutes. The CIS all-star cast outshot Great Britain 48-4 including a 13-0 advantage in the first, 15-2 in the middle frame and 20-2 in the third.

Breanne George and Andrea Boras tallied five points apiece.

Styles, a Wilfrid Laurier University forward from Orangeville, Ont., made it 8-0 Canada midway through the second period before adding three goals in a span of 11 minutes in the third.

George, a University of Saskatchewan student from Saskatoon, also had a hat-trick with a goal in each period, and added a pair of assists. Boras, a University of Alberta rearguard from Calgary, amassed five helpers.

Three other players tallied at least three points including Dalhousie's Jocelyn Leblanc of Moncton, who had two goals and two assists, York's Courtney Unruh of Fort St. John, B.C., who finished with a goal and two helpers, and Laurier's Alicia Martin of Etobicoke, Ont., who set up three scoring plays.

Also finding the back of the net for Canada was York's Kelsey Webster of Duncan, B.C., and Montreal's Kim Deschênes of Saint-Quentin, N.B., who both had singles.

Deschênes scored the game-winner just 79 seconds into the contest and the Canadians were up 3-0 after only 5:14 of play.

In a game that featured only one penalty - to Great Britain - all of Canada's goals were scored at even strength.

Laurier netminder Liz Knox recorded her first shutout and her second win of the tournament. The Soutffville, Ont., native was in net for Canada's 2-1 shootout victory over Finland on Thursday.

Lita-Lee Jarrold took the loss despite a 34-save effort.

Ìý

With two games remaining in the preliminary round, Canada is the only undefeated team in the six-country field and has a one-point lead over Finland (2-0-1) in the standings. The top four teams advance to the semifinals.

Canada wraps up round-robin play with duels against the United States (1-2) Monday at 11 a.m. local time (4 a.m. ET) and Turkey (0-2) Wednesday at 8 p.m. local (1 p.m. ET).
