Canada should back the declaration to protect civilians from explosive weapons | The Globe and Mail
October 18, 2022 | In this opinion piece,听Simon Bagshaw and Jennifer Welsh听comment on the gathering in Dublin held to formally endorse a groundbreaking international political declaration that will set new standards for the protection of civilians from the use of bombs, rockets, artillery and other explosive weapons in populated areas during armed conflict. Stating that the declaration comes not a moment too soon.听
They've said that signing the declaration would send an important signal that Canada cares about protecting civilians from the death and destruction associated with the use of explosive weapons in populated areas. Furthermore they highlighted that signing on to the explosive weapons declaration in Dublin would not amount to a nostalgic or "soft" exercise in foreign policy, as some critics might claim.
