SPECIAL SEMINAR: "The Role of Astrocytes in Neurodegeneration"
A Special Seminar entitled "The Role of Astrocytes in Neurodegeneration" is being given by Serge Przedborski, MD, PhD of Columbia University. Dr. Przedborsky is the Page and William Black Professor of Neurology, Co-Director of the Center for Motor Neuron Biology and Disease, Departments of Neurology, Pathology, and Cell Biology, College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University.
Dr. Serge Przedborski has pioneered the investigation of molecular mechanisms of neuronal death in the MPTP model of Parkinson's disease (PD) and in the mutant superoxide dismutase model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). His research has demonstrated the importance of the cascade of deleterious events - oxidative stress, inflammation and apoptosis - in the demise of nigral dopaminergic neurons in PD and of spinal cord motor neurons in ALS.
