Fabio Scetti's work focuses on migration, language variation and endangered minority languages. He has studied the Portuguese community in Montreal, Portuguese immigration in the United States and in Australia, and Brazilian immigration to Japan.

During his stay at CIRM in the summer of 2023, Mr. Scetti worked on Montreal's Italian community, its language practices and the representations that members of the said "community" have of these practices. CRIEM met with him to discuss his progress.

CIRM is pleased to announce the arrival of a new Administrative Supervisor to its team. With 25 years of experience in her field, Assunta Fiorita will be an essential asset to our Research Centre as she is going to coordinate daily operations and oversee the development of activities related to administrative services and finance, as well as material and human resources. In her spare time, she likes to swim, do some journaling, and read anything she can get her hands on, hoping one day she can publish her own thoughts. We wish her a warm welcome!

In addition to its original affiliation with the Faculty of Arts, CIRM is now attached to the Faculty of Engineering at �山ǿ��. Nik Luka, CIRM Interim Director from 2020 to 2021, joins Pascal Brissette at the head of the centre. This change was made possible with the collaboration of Deans Mary Hunter and Jim Nicell.

Two CIRM members receive funding for their COVID-19 research

In response to the current health crisis, the latest Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) of Canada Partnership Engagement Grants competition included a special initiative for research related to COVID-19. More than $3 million was awarded to 139 projects across the country. CIRM is proud to announce that two of its members have received funding as principal investigators and will contribute to efforts to address the challenges posed by the pandemic in their respective fields.

Remembering Jarrett Rudy (1970 - 2020)

Born November 14, 1970, in Stratford, and raised in Tavistock, Ontario. He died at home on April 4, 2020, from complications following heart surgery, at 49 years of age. His early passing is deeply mourned by his wife, Cynthia Kelly, father and mother, Bob & Joan (Korgaard) Rudy, brother and sister-in-law, Jensen & Heidi (Janzen) Rudy, their two children, Daniel & Kate Rudy, and Heidi’s father, Peter Janzen.

The CIRM and the �山ǿ��’s Quebec Studies Program learned with great sorrow of the passing of �山ǿ��’s Chancellor Emerita Gretta Chambers. Dear friend of CIRM and the Quebec Studies Program, she is one of those who supported the creation of the first research group dedicated to Montreal studies, at �山ǿ��, in 2012. CHancellor Emerita Chambers also has always maintained that our university has an important role to play in the production and dissemination of knowledge about Montreal and the province of Quebec.

Strong of his experience as Director of International Affairs and Places program of the Young Foundation (London), as Special Advisor to the Executive Office of the Basque President and as co-founder of SILK, a social innovation laboratory in the Basque countries, Gorka Espiau brings to Montreal and provides to the CIRM an international perspective on the social transformations taking place in the city.

CIRM : Official Research Center of �山ǿ��

Since 2014, the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on Montreal has had the standing of a provisional center of the Faculty of Arts of �山ǿ��. On May 25^th this year, following a one-year evaluation process, the Senate of �山ǿ�� granted the CIRM the status of a permanent research center. For the CIRM, this is an important step in its development and we look forward to announcing good news regarding the future of the Center.
