Internship Spotlight: Natalie Olivares

Project 10 provides social, sexual and mental support services for 2LGBTQIAP+ youth in Montreal. Through individual support, group programs, material support, and outreach, P 10 aims to improve isolation, provide referrals and create systems of support for queer and transgender youth.

I knew I wanted to work with Project 10 since I first learned of the power of their community. My research with Project 10 in a previous class opened a door for me to explore where my place may be in the social justice and activist world. After meeting with the fundraising coordinator at Project 10, it became clear that more than anything I wanted to become involved with P10 this summer. When I realized that there was an award prioritized for queer folks doing community based work, I was ecstatic at the opportunity to be compensated for my passions.

In the first month, I learned so much about the communications work behind a non-profit. I wrote and made graphics for their May newsletter and learned the benefits of using simple and accessible design platforms like Canva. Since then, I have made Instagram and Facebook posts including the visuals, captions and alternative text readings. I learned about the translation technology Deep L , which has inspired me to consider learning French after realizing how similar French and Spanish are. In addition, I helped rewrite and edit their new website content as well as take photographs for their

My goals for the internship were to be open to learn, listen and take accountability for my actions and mistakes, and connect closer with other people in my queer community. More than anything, I gained a new understanding of the power of being with other queer folks. In my anti-canonical queer theory class in June, I was offered the opportunity to attend queer community events for extra credit. This, along with my research on queer friendly events for Project 10鈥檚 Facebook page, encouraged me to seek out a type of social life that is truly more me.

Something I will forever cherish from this internship is the amount of trust and understanding I was rewarded with during my time at Project 10. My supervisor consistently checked in with me to make sure I was not doing too much, that I was happy with our work, and asking how I am feeling. Each time I walked into L鈥橝sterisk I was heard, seen and most of all cared about, leaving me with high standards for future workplace environments.

This internship provided me with a communications skillset and community connections I am proud of and appreciate every day. It has allowed me to understand one path my career could take, knowing that I have options. I would like to express my sincere thanks to Mr. Blachford and Mr. Mcgillivray for making this experience possible.
